Columbus Day thoughts Show more
I wish that instead of Columbus Day, we would have Atonement Day.
This would be a day where we who are privileged reflect on how we abuse our power and benefit from an abusive system. How our wealth comes largely from colonialism, where a handful of countries enslaved the world and took all their shit. To reflect that, as individuals, we could not possibly repay the world in our lifetimes for hundreds of years of injustice.
Then we try to make amends by working on it.
The security/privacy paradox:
To make a system secure and private, it needs to be 100% transparent to the Good People, and 100% opaque to the Bad People.
But the system has no way of knowing whether any given People are Good or Bad.
They may even be the exact same People at the exact same time, just seen through different People's eyes.
Why you can't have privacy on the Internet - a thoughtful read.

Okami video game Show more
Okami is easily one of my favorites, but you would think some of these remakes would:
a) make the 15 minute intro cutscene skippable. I mean seriously, wtf.
b) add a hard mode for players that want a tiny bit of challenge. The upgrades are almost worthless because the base level is just so easy. My seven year old just beat it without dying and skipping almost all the side stories.

If you're feeling smug about the Facebook breaches because you don't have an account, you might want to look up about FB's shadow accounts.
I think a person might actually have more rights by having an account. Don't take that as advice, though.

Dates are so damn good I can't believe they grew on a tree. Why aren't they more popular and in everything?
There should be a word... Show more
There should be a word for the strangers you see repeatedly, year after year, as on a common commute. You watch them grow older, their children growing up. You see them happy, sad, yelling on their phone. You see the clothes they pick for each season. Their struggles and joys are reflected and known in the tiny daily slices we witness. How could we not feel connected, even distant and nameless?
This only happens in the city. You see a lot of strangers in the city.
