In the 1960s, the ecological notion that "there is no 'away' to throw things" finally became widespread regards pollution, first stated by Barry Commoner.
In the 2010s, the informational notion that "there is no 'other' informatics ecosystem" on which security, privacy, or surveillance practices and principles apply is slowly dawning.
"..things that can be parsed as variable names are treated as variable names in arithmetic contexts. ..bash does this *recursively* until it gets to an integer, or to something that can't be parsed as either an integer or a variable name."
OMG. This is _not_ documented.
My Pebble's vibration motor finally bit the dust, so now I'm smartwatch shopping. The contenders are not promising in comparison.
I found one that looked kind of neat and got rave reviews, but then I looked at the Android app reviews and they were filled with bile and regret.
I sure wish Pebble hadn't gone out of business.
Birdsite, farming demographics
This whole thread is pretty great.

@SarahTaber_bww: If you've ever wondered how the countryside went from "rank with socialists" to "stodgy good ol' boy stronghold" in 50 years, there it is.
Farm country used to be full of labor. Now it's mostly management.
Long thought-provoking piece about the upper class (in Yale specifically and the US broadly) and their abdication of the responsibilities of privilege.
This is so profound on so many levels I don't know where to begin.
When Having Friends Is More Alluring Than Being Right
I dropped my #IRC client onto github today! It's 1000sloc of #Tcl/Tk for the core, plus a bunch of plugins. I've been using it as my primary #IRC client for the past couple of years, so it's well-used.
It's not for everyone, but I'd say it's one of the most hackable #IRC clients out there.
uspol, musings on due process and police states
@jacethechicken Its also impossible to forget that there's a "fuck up trans people's citizenship papers and ID" memo floating around in this administration, as was seen last December.
That would hit us right here on Masto.
I don't have a problem with people in my yard, Todd, just people who don't ask permission. Those people are vermin by definition. You're really better off getting a new family - one that doesn't trespass in the yards of honest citizens.
You know, Todd, I'm not sure your family is there any more anyway. My basement is only so big, you know, so I may have shipped them to some other basements. Keep them together? What purpose would that have served?
Todd, you're getting awfully worked up about this. Well I checked with the police, and they said it was okay since the people were illegally there. I just call them illegals for short. Why would I have a shower in my basement? That seems like a huge waste of money!
They'll be fine, Todd. I have about 50 other people in there, and they're all doing fine. I mean, they should have read the sign, right? Crowded? I guess so, but it's kind of their fault, isn't it? They were trespassing in my yard, so I can do whatever I want with them.
